Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in the word association when she was a teenager. Ford was first interested in acting at the age of teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford later applied for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford was graduated in 1993, but at the time she was already making her TV debut on a 1991 episode from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually joining in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
